What We’re Up To

Our association is hard at work co-ordinating the delivery of programs and services for the wellbeing of our community. Get involved with any of the initiatives below or bring a new idea forward.

  • Health and Wellness

We strive to offer a diverse, age friendly and safe environment through unique and creative programs. Our health and wellness activities are focused outside the typical skiing, snowboarding and pub crawls and are offered FREE to members.

Examples of previous activities include movie nights, fitness classes, snowshoeing, stockings for seniors, letters to Santa, disk golf, tai chi, Christmas hampers and arts and crafts.

  • Refundables Program

Donate your refundables! Just place your items in a garbage bag and take them to the refundables shed located in the parking lot of Big White Community School off Happy Valley parking lot. You can also inquire about your strata becoming a client with refundable pick up services.

The proceeds are shared between our community association and the Big White Community School PAC. The funds have been used for our community health and wellness programs, a boot and hat warming station at the school, library books and other supplies.

  • Greenhouse, Garden and Community Hub

We are working to develop access to sustainable, affordable and nutritious fresh food.

The BWMCDA, with funding that has been provided [in part] by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the Local Food Infrastructure Fund, will be purchasing a High Altitude Heavy Snow Load Adapted Greenhouse, which will commence construction in late summer, early fall of 2022.

  • Early Learning Center

  • Food Security

A BWMCDA board member sits on the RDKB Food Security Steering Committee and through this partnership has been able to establish several Food Security programs.

With the help of the Food Banks in Grande Forks we were able to provide over 250 Emergency Food Boxes to those isolating and in need due to the impacts of Covid 19.

We have also established an ongoing Food Security program with the Central Okanagan Food Bank. This program provides food hampers to all Big White residents who are in need regardless if you are seasonal, part time or full time, single or families.

  • Summer Camp

The Kids Summer Program is run each year by the community association. Information for the 2023 summer camp will be posted in Spring of 2023.

  • Community Block Watch

Calling all volunteers!!!!! Block Watch is a resident-led initiative to protect our community from crime. It is a robust program that educates residents to harden properties against opportunistic crime, such as theft. This program has proven very affective in the past, particularly in the off season when many residences are vacant. The program was temporarily paused and is being reinvigorated. We are currently seeking volunteers. Send us a message through our contact page to inquire about volunteering.

  • Recycling at Big White - Do It Right or Not

We all want to do the right thing by recycling. However, when not done properly it can do more harm than good. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary manages the recycling programs at Big White and has some great instructional resources. Take a minute to learn which materials are included in the recycling program and which are not, as well as how to participate in the Return-It Express & Go program at the following links:
